Religious feasts or ‘festas’ are an important part of Maltese culture and tradition held throughout the year across both Malta and Gozo. Festas are organized by the local parish together with local festa band clubs, and are an iconic part of the Maltese summer with massive fireworks, church ceremonies, processions with marching bands and great revelry. Their importance in village life seems to be increasing rather than diminishing with time, and they are just epic celebrations that everyone visiting Malta needs to experience at least once.

The feast is not limited to the final feast day indicated here, as all towns and villages have a program of processions, concerts and other activities for five days before the feast day. A detailed program is usually found on the relevant village parish and band club websites.

Tourist tours to visit village feasts are organised all year round but especially to coincide with most festive weeks of the feast of the Assumption or simply ‘Santa Marija’ on the 15th August and the 8th September feast of the Nativity which commemorates Malta’s 1565 victory over the Ottoman Turks with a big annual regatta in the Grand Harbour. Both are great times to visit Malta if you can take the summer’s heat!
